LainOS is an open source programming project that aims to produce a Unix-like operating system that recreates the interface of the fictional computer Navi from the anime Serial Experiments Lain. Its base system is FreeBSD. The project's primary focus is the GUI, which will involve writing a variation on XFree86 that will use OpenGL for all primitive functions and a Blackbox-based window manager, LainWM. As of June 2005, the project has ceased development.

Project History

The project was originally started by Chris Gilbert in 2003. It has progressed very slowly and as of early 2007 there have been no project updates.
