gnome-screensaver is the GNOME project's official screensaver program. On some GNOME-based Linux distributions, it is used instead of the more common XScreenSaver.

The program can run the usual hacks for XScreenSaver and lock the screen. It is designed for improved integration with a GNOME desktop, including themeability, language support, and Human Interface Guidelines compliance. It also provides fast user switching from the locked screen.

Compared to XScreenSaver, gnome-screensaver has a simpler interface but less customizability. For instance, users may not select which screensavers to select at random – either only one is selected or the program randomly selects from the whole list. It also lacks a setting to control cycling through different screensavers. Some aspects of XScreenSaver, such as power management, are handled through other parts of the GNOME desktop.
